The artworks are “DNA” by Melanie Perkins and “Rain of text” by Takahiro Iwasaki. These two unusual artworks were the winners of a design competition at the Edinburgh College of Art which was organized by the National Health Service (NHS) Arts Committee and by Balfour Beatty Capital. The works were purchased for the hospital by Balfour Beatty Capital. "DNA" was conceived specifically for the main entrance of Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, intended as a celebration of the new hospital and its long history. The inspiration for the artwork comes from images of DNA fingerprints. The discs making up this piece are black on the underside, but mirrored on the top surfaces, so the visual experience varies depending on the viewpoint. The artist’s intention is to bring the beautiful light of Edinburgh into the hospital. |
"Rain of text" is suspended from the main mall ceiling in Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where it can be slowly discovered. It is in the three languages of Scotland: Gaelic, Scottish and English.
